Advice For Canadians

This web site was started in 2003 to provide assistance to members of the public (mostly but not exclusively Canadian) who are looking for information on a variety of subjects of a financial services nature. Our database contains articles, news releases, facts and data on topics like investing, financial and estate planning, pensions, mortgages, law, insurance, taxes and the like. We have compiled by subject category and date (see under Archives in menu).

The posting on this site are varied in nature. Some are intended to be instructive (Questions to be Decided in Preparing Your Will) , some technical in composition (Alter Ego and Joint Partner Trusts); others of an advocacy nature (Financial Planning Tips for Surviving and Thriving in a Recession), others still clearly opinionated and intending to provoke controversy (Investment Advisors and Conflict of Interest).

To search for a topic of interest, simply enter the appropriate keywords into the search window in the upper right horizontal menu bar. The search is simple – it will return all posts that contain any of the entered keywords. Alternatively, browse the site by category; select from the category titles down the right-hand vertical menu bar. Articles are posted in date order, the newest appearing first.

Always be aware of the indicated date on our articles. Many of these posts are several years old and their accuracy, particularly those of a legal nature, may be affected by subsequent legislation, changes in statute or judicial interpretation. As well, live links in articles may no longer be functional. Due to the volume of material on this site we do not update once posted.

You will notice that many of our posts have an author’s accreditation and contact link at the bottom. The author is a financial services or legal representative who may be contacted for more information or engaged professionally by members of the public. As well, most of our posts appear with a form that may be filled out requesting our (ProfessionalReferrals.ca) recommendation of someone qualified to provide advice or services. If either action is taken there is no fee charged by ProfessionalReferrals.ca, nor is there any obligation to engage  the services of an advisor once contact has been made.
